Where are the best mountain bike rides in New Zealand?

With more than a thousand to choose from, this book is our definitive answer. We have distilled three decades of mountain biking, track building, research and exploring into a guide to the best of the best. It’s a celebration of New Zealand’s forty finest adventures on two wheels.

Since this book was first published in 1991, mountain bike events, tracks and bikes have undergone a stunning transformation – from pushing heavy fully-rigid clunkers along overgrown stock routes to whipping around purpose-built trails on lightweight full-suspension machines. And over that time, this book has evolved, from a small black-and-white publication to the 416-pager you’re looking at.

This, the 10th edition of Classic New Zealand Mountain Bike Rides, has focused on our 40 favourite rides. They range from fantastically popular mountain bike parks like Whakarewarewa in Rotorua to the inspirational, multi-day, Old Ghost Road on the West Coast of the South Island.

For each ride, you will find:

  • a detailed route description
  • Geographx 3D maps
  • elevation charts
  • essential tips and nearby services
  • the intriguing back story to these fabulous rides

You can download and print the Top 40 NZ MTB rides bucket list chart. What are you missing?

“The Bible of where to ride” – Jeff Brass, New Zealand Herald

For 30 years, the Kennett Brothers have carved a name for themselves in the sport of mountain biking, organising countless events, from the 1986 Karapoti Classic, the Southern Hemisphere’s longest-running race, to the 3000-kilometre Tour Aotearoa bikepacking odyssey.

They are New Zealand’s leading publishers of cycling books, with more than 20 titles under their belts. They have led many track-building projects, including Golden Bay’s Project Rameka and the award-winning Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park.

The brothers’ efforts were recognised internationally in 2018, when they were inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.
